Mount volleyball team plays first ECT game
CALDWELL - The Mount St. Dominic Academy volleyball team has a 13-4 record and will compete in the first round of the Essex County Tournament this week.
The Lions are the No. 7 seed in the tournament. They will play in the first round Saturday, Oct. 16. Their opponent is to be determined based on the results of the preliminary rounds.
Last season, which was delayed from fall 2020 to spring 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Mount team's record was 7-10. The Lions reached the semifinals of the NJSIAA North, Non-Public A Tournament.
They won their past five matches as they head into the county tournament.
They defeated Nutley, 2-0, on Sept. 29. Isabella Rivera had 13 assists, Bridget Lonergan registered 11 kills and Marissa Munoz had eight assists.
Their next victory was over Newark Academy, 2-0, on Oct. 1. Lonergan had 19 digs and nine kills. Rivera had 18 assists and 12 digs. Brianna Jiminez had 10 digs, while Brooke Algieri and Munoz each had eight digs.
In a victory over Cedar Grove on Oct. 4, Rivera had nine kills and four digs. Sophia Bochis had nine digs. Lonergan registered seven digs, six kills and three blocks. Algieri had six digs and three kills.
The Mount defeated Belleville, 2-0, on Oct. 5. Rivera had 21 assists and four digs. Lonergan had 15 kills. Bochis had seven digs, and Algieri had six digs and five kills.
Their most recent victory was against Montclair, 2-1, on Thursday, Oct. 7. Lonergan registered 15 kills, 15 digs, four blocks and three aces. Rivera had 20 assists and six digs. Kiera Bevilacqua had 12 digs and four kills. Jiminez had seven digs. Algieri had six digs and five kills, and Munoz registered five digs.
The Lions opened the season with a 2-1 victory over West Essex on Sept. 8. Rivera had 25 assists, four aces and three digs. Lonergan had 15 kills and four blocks, and Jiminez had 11 digs.
The Mount defeated Nutley, 2-0, on Sept. 10. Rivera had 17 assists and five aces, while Algieri had 10 kills.
In a quad meet Sept. 11, the Lions defeated Nutley, 2-0, and lost to Verona, 2-1, and James Caldwell, 2-1.
Against Nutley, Rivera had 15 assists, four digs and three kills. Algieri had eight kills and eight digs, and Jiminez had six digs. Against Verona, Rivera had nine assists and five digs, and Jiminez had 11 digs. And in the Caldwell match, Rivera had 12 assists and four digs, Lonergan had eight kills and six blocks, and Algieri finished with eight digs, six kills and two aces.
The Lions defeated Belleville, 2-0, on Sept. 13. Rivera had 13 assists. Lonergan had seven kills, four aces, three blocks and two digs.
In a 2-1 victory over Montclair on Sept. 15, Jiminez had 23 digs. Rivera had 17 assists and six digs. Algieri had 10 digs.
Against Orange on Sept. 17, the Lions defeated Orange, 2-0. Rivera had 12 assists.
The Lions defeated Bloomfield, 2-0, on Sept. 20. Lonergan had eight kills and three digs. Algieri had seven digs and four kills, and Rivera had 10 assists.
The Lions then defeated East Orange, 2-0, on Sept. 22. Rivera had 15 assists, Munoz had seven digs, and Lonergan had six kills and five aces.
The Mount's most recent losses were to Montclair Kimberley Academy, 2-0, on Sept. 24, and Livingston, 2-0, on Sept. 28.
The Lions were set to face Bloomfield on Wednesday, Oct. 13. They are scheduled to take on East Orange on Wednesday, Oct. 20; Clifton on Friday, Oct. 22; and Montclair Kimberley Academy on Monday, Oct. 25.
