Local winter track teams brought home medals from the Essex County Championships, held at Ocean Breeze Stadium in Staten Island, N.Y., on Wednesday, Jan. 19.
Mount St. Dominic Academy senior Gianna Mangili '22 won the 55-meter dash and broke a school record by finishing in 7.19.
“Breaking the 55-meter school record for the second time puts a cap on what has been a successful track season for Gianna thus far, which has also seen her run a personal indoor best in the 200 meters (26.06). Her time ranks among the best in the state in the 55 dash,” said the Mount's head coach Mike Vigil.
“At this point in the season, we are entering our final phase of training heading into championship season. Gianna has significant goals, including winning a medal at the state Meet of Champions and Eastern States Championships and qualifying for nationals.”
Mangili also took fourth place in the 200m dash (26.62) at the county championships.
“Gianna came to us as a three-sport athlete (soccer, basketball and track),” Vigil said. “She continued with soccer and track through this year and has committed to run at Lehigh University in the fall. Gianna is a standout athlete and teammate as well as team captain in both winter and spring track.”
In the shot put, sophomore Anna Caccicarne '24 placed fifth place (29-11 1/4) and junior Keira Carbone '23 took sixth place (29-4 1/2).
The 1,600-meter relay team of Mangili and sophomores Eliza Haghighi '24, Riley Merklinger '24, and Naya Martinez '24 finished in sixth place (4:33.95).
Freshman Isabella Dressler '25 finished in seventh place in the 3,200-meter run (13:30.7).
