CALDWELL - Melissa Pathil, a senior at Mount St. Dominic Academy, has won the National Merit Pfizer Scholarship.

The Parsippany resident was one of 1,000 high school seniors nationwide awarded National Merit Scholarships financed by about 160 corporations, company foundations and other business organizations.

She listed biophysics as her probable career field.

Pfizer, which has plants in about 40 countries, makes pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, hospital products and consumer products. It awards National Merit scholarship to the children of employees.

Most of the corporate-sponsored awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends from $1,000 to $10,000. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000. Recipients may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university of their choice.
