Gianna Mangilli '22 and Maria Holevas '22 each scored as 13th-seeded Mount St. Dominic took a 2-1 upset over fourth-seeded and No. 17 in NJ.com Top 20 Newark Academy, in the first round of the Essex County Tournament, in Livingston.

The outcome was also Newark Academy’s first loss of the season, which drops the team’s record to 6-1.Mount St. Dominic (5-7) will take on fifth-seeded Montclair Kimberley in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

The Lions fought back from a 1-0 halftime deficit by scoring two unanswered goals in the second half.

Frankie Mansfield '23 and Christina Piparo '22 shared duties in goal for MSD, as Mansfield made two saves while Piparo made one.

Ava Cole scored for Newark Academy in the opening half, and Zoe Hermans finished with five saves.
