Hispanic Heritage Month at the Mount

Hispanic Heritage Month at the Mount

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, with a national theme of Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power and Progress in America, the Mount held an empowering and festive assembly, spearheaded by Social Studies Department Chair Nicole Perez, on Thursday, Oct. 5. First, Mount students talked about famous Latinos who have left their marks on society in history, the arts, sports and more. The student presenters included: Alexis Castaneda '26, Alexa Leiva Carrasco '26, Leiloni Reside '26, Isabella Dressler '25, Arianna Jean-Philippe '25. Next, after a wonderful introduction by her daughter Kaitlyn Ferris '24, the audience was enraptured by an informative and empowering talk by career financier and Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Northern Trust Corporation Karolyn Ferris, who, in 2018, was recognized as one of the 50 Most Powerful Latinas in Business by Fortune and the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA). Karolyn gave out plastic chips that said "curiosity" and "confidence," which she told the audience were essential to success. Then came the dancing segment of the assembly where the audience was taught how to do the merengue by Jalissa Cortes '24. Team Pasteles and Team Mangu hit the stage and performed the dance for the viewers, with Team Mangu taking the win, due to lots of festive dancing and twirling. The committee would like to thank Señor Castrillon and Señor Smith, whose advice and partnership was crucial in creating the event. #msda1892 #wearethemount #hispanicheritagemonth #womenempoweringwomen
