On Tuesday, Nov. 14th, 10 Mount students, who are part of the Laudato Si Action Platform (LSAP) club chaperoned by Mr. DeCarlo and Senor Smith, participated in a field trip to Turtle Back Zoo. They were hosted by Horticulture Curator and Operations Deborah D. MacEvoy. Ms. MacEvoy and her staff gave the Mount a great behind-the-scenes look at the Zoo. They taught the group about composting, and gave them a tour of the greenhouses and beehives. The students also participated in animal enrichment with the Zoo’s bison, where they gave them sugar pumpkins for both play and nutrition.
Later, the group ate lunch together, and then explored the Zoo making connections with staff members at various exhibits so as to plan for future collaborations. Upon arrival at the Zoo, the Mount delivered about 30 pumpkins, which were used for composting.
The LSAP club is an umbrella organization housing a few of the Mount’s clubs including the Environmental Club, Animal Club, Gardening Club, Nature Observation Club, and Marine Biology/Oceanography Club. This club is named for Pope Francis’ encyclical of the same name (Laudato Si), which discusses “Care For Our Common Home.”
