What Makes Mount Saint Dominic So Special?

"Although there may be times when we think we may fall, there will always be someone there to catch us."

Nicole Quinn,
Class of 2005 Salutatorian ( Currently attends Vanderbilt  University )

Research by psychologists from Harvard, American University, and Michigan University
reveals that not all schools are created equal for girls.

They find that in co-educational classrooms:

Boys are called on four times more often and interrupted less.
Boys dominate discussions and are listened to more attentively.
Boys are questioned more and challenged more.
Reports of girls' sexual harassment by male classmates are increasing

In other studies available, it is found that those who attend a single sex school:

Participate more fully in that school both in and out of the class.
Develop measurably higher levels of self-esteem.
Score higher on standardized tests.
                                                   Choose more challenging careers.
Are more likely to graduate from college.

How do we account for this major difference? Simply put, it seems if a girl is freed from the mistake of measuring her sense of self-worth by whether or not she is noticed and liked by boys in her school, she is also free to discover her own identity, to excel academically and athletically, and to serve in leadership roles. In other words, she spends the four most formative years of her life in an environment that enables her to find sufficient self-confidence to last her for the rest of her life.

At Mount Saint Dominic Academy every young woman spends her four years discovering the best about herself and acquiring the courage to use those gifts to shape a better world for herself, her family, and society in general.
