Shakespeare LIVE! at the Mount
Shakespeare was alive and well at MSDA with The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s touring company, Shakespeare LIVE! The dynamic and captivating performers made Shakespeare understandable and enjoyable for the Mount community. This program was s a joint venture coordinated by the MSDA English Department, Curriculum Directors, and Performing Arts Department.
Live performance and workshop
“A Comedy of Errors” was performed and the Mount audience enjoyed the slapstick humor, wordplay, and cases of mistaken identity. During the post-performance discussion, Mount students questioned the cast about their acting and also Shakespeare’s tragedies and comedies. They learned that Shakespeare wrote in Modern English, not in Old English, and that many words and phrases invented by Shakespeare are still in use today. Shakespeare LIVE! portrayed Shakespeare’s relevance and humor.
At the “Speak the Speech” workshop, students “got on their feet” and took part in the challenge and fun. Students incorporated cognitive learning, analysis and extrapolation, phonics, and advanced reading and interpretive skills. They also explored imagery, allusion, and metaphor.
Shakespeare LIVE!’s mission
According to the mission of Shakespeare LIVE!, the company presents dynamic and visually imaginative productions of Shakespeare’s plays to students. The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey explains that when Shakespeare’s plays were originally produced, they were enacted on a simple, bare stage. The audience was captivated by riveting stories and rich characters. But in our current digital age and use of visual special effects, the live theater presentation of Shakespeare allows individuals to see the great scope and passion of the human experience.
