MSDA’s New High School Platform Tennis (Paddle) Club
There’s a new club at the Mount – MSDA High School Platform Tennis (Paddle) Club!
Platform Tennis (referred to as Paddle) is a fast-growing sport in NJ and is played on an outdoor paddle court during the season of November until March. Participating high schools play “paddle” at a neighboring country club that has an established “paddle facility” and under the auspices of the resident Racquets/Paddle professional of that Club. In 2017, a newly established high school Paddle Tennis league was initiated in New Jersey to capitalize on this popularity and create a year-round racquet program in high schools. Schools currently participating are: Chatham High School, Seton Hall Prep, Morristown High School, Summit High School, Oak Knoll School, Delbarton School, Madison High School, Bergan Catholic, North Hunterdon High School, Mill Run High School, Mountain Lakes High School, West Essex High School, and New Providence High School. Paddle tennis has also become a popular college sport with recruitment possibilities at schools including Bucknell, Denison, Georgetown, Middlebury, UNC Chapel Hill, Williams, Yale as well as many northeast colleges with active paddle clubs.
This new activity offered at the Mount will take place at the Essex Fells Country Club Platform Tennis courts and will be supervised by Mikk Irodja – Paddle Team Coach/Director of Racquets-Essex Fells Country Club/8th Nationally-Ranked Men’s Paddle Player/Two-time NCAA Division II Champion, & Estonian Davis Cup Player; Molli Dowd – Paddle Team Assistant Coach/MKA Girl’s Varsity & JV Volleyball coach/Top 100 Nationally Ranked Women’s Paddle Player; Jane Berra – Paddle Team Assistant/Top 100 Nationally Ranked Women’s Paddle Player; and Moderator Kate Sullivan, Director of Alumnae at MSDA.
