Habitat for Humanity – First Service Trip

Making the Community a Better Place

MSDA students had the opportunity to attend their first Habitat for Humanity trip assisting Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark. On a freezing cold December day and dressed in many warm layers along and heavy-soled work boots, students were enthusiastic to be participating and helping to make the community a better place.

The Habitat for Humanity club was initiated this year and the club will continue to assist Habitat for Humanity in the building of homes for low- and moderate-income families. Student volunteers will work under the guidance of the professional construction staff and trained professional volunteers. The work on the selected houses includes framing, insulation, sheet rocking, siding, painting, installation of flooring, landscaping, and more. Volunteers are shown the proper way to do the job and the correct handling of equipment.

MSDA student volunteers arrived at a house in Orange and assisted with installation of wood floors on the main level and second floor of the home. They measured, cut wood, and learned how to use a nail gun. They also learned about Habitat’s mission, the various housing projects currently being worked on, and were thrilled to know they had a part in giving a young family of four a new home.

MSDA’s School Chapter

Mount students learned about high school and college groups around the state of New Jersey that support Habitat of Greater Newark with their own local Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapters and clubs. So a new club was started at MSDA. Habitat’s youth programs seek to engage young people and involve them as leaders in the work of Habitat for Humanity.

Every Habitat for Humanity Chapter has 4 main functions:
1. Building and rehabilitating houses in partnership with Habitat for Humanity affiliate and homeowners.
2. Fundraising for the work of Habitat.
3. Advocating on behalf of people in need of decent shelter and for an end to poverty housing.
4. Educating the chapter members, campus, and the local community about the work and mission of Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark has the mission of decent, affordable housing for all and is sincerely thankful for all contributions to this effort. With the help of volunteers, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark builds and repairs homes throughout the year across Newark and Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties each week. Habitat Newark improves our community together and provides a safe and productive experience for volunteers. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark looks forward to collaborating in the future with our MSDA school community.
