Additional Opportunities
Mount Saint Dominic Academy's
preparation of young women for college and more importantly for life is rooted
in the Dominican educational tradition of learning, living, and spreading the
truth. In this context, the school strives to develop the spiritual growth of
its students in order to equip them to flourish in and to contribute to the
worlds in which they will study, work, and live.
To foster each student's sense
of social responsibility, the school places great importance on service as a
factor in her growth and development. Service is an integral part of the school
experience, effected through a school-wide service program. In addition,
activities and clubs provide awareness of and opportunities for service. The
student is prepared to go out into the world having permanently incorporated the
value of service into her personal philosophy.
Catholic Christianity
This course
provides a comprehensive study of Catholic Christianity and establishes the
foundation for the entire high school religion curriculum. Out of their own
religious experiences, the students will study what we, as Roman Catholics,
believe. In the course of the year, students will be introduced to the complex
process of moral growth. Coming to maturity as a Christian human person is a key
concept for this course of studies.
Sacred Scripture
This course
is designed to introduce the student to the people and history of the Old and
New Testaments. The development of the Bible from its literary, historical and
cultural background will be examined. The course challenges the student to
understand God's presence and activity in the biblical records of Salvation
History and make connections in their Christian lives today.
Church History / Morality
The first
part of this course is designed to trace the historical development of the old
Catholic Church from its beginnings to the present day. It serves as an
appropriate follow-up to the course on Sacred Scripture since the foundation of
the Church is rooted there. In each time period, emphasis will be placed on
major issues and events, significant persons and meaningful doctrines. There
will also be an emphasis on relating each time period to our present experience
of the Church. The second part of this course will assist the student in
understanding the challenging process of moral development and decision making.
Stages of moral development, formation of conscience and examination of ethical
issues will be analyzed. The second semester will focus on how to live moral
lives in light of the gospel, by examining justice issues relating to human
dignity, power, peace, and the environment.
Christian Life
The Senior Religious Studies curriculum is a full-year seminar consisting
of the study of Contemporary Church, Social Justice Issues, World Religions, and
Spirituality. This course prepares young women to take their places as members
of the 21st century Christian community.
