Types of Literature
The student is introduced to various types and styles of literature. Included
are studies of the short story, drama, poetry, the novel, the epic and media.
The fundamental structure of each type is investigated and discussed in terms of
its basic elements and techniques with emphasis upon developing the
interpretative skills of the student. Throughout the course, equal emphasis is
placed upon improving vocabulary, grammar and process writing skills.
Types of Literature Honors
T his course will
focus on investigating the elements and techniques of various styles and types
of literature. Emphasis will be on developing the critical and interpretative
skills of the student. Analytical writing in response to literature will be
highlighted. Independent reading and supplementary assignments are given in
addition to class work. Students are expected to work at a quicker pace,
absorbing various forms of literature.

American Literature
The student is introduced to American Literature through the study of examples
in writing from all periods presented in chronological order. Emphasis is placed
upon appreciation of American literature, observing its growth and establishing
it as a prominent force in the world of letters. Much time is devoted to
furthering the improvement of grammar, vocabulary and writing skills begun in
the previous year.
American Literature Honors
This course focuses on a chronological
and historical study of American Literature from its inception to modern times.
All the material of the standard American Literature course is covered but with
extensive analysis and additional reading of the classic American novels.
Application of previously mastered writing skills is directed toward writing in
portfolios and critical analysis. Students are required to do more independent
reading and to respond in writing to works not necessarily discussed in class.

British Literature
In this year, the student is
introduced to a chronological study of British Literature from its Anglo-Saxon
period to modern times. Emphasis is placed upon reading and interpreting works
of the great masters. The course enables the student to make genre distinctions
and to develop the knowledge of literary trends. Incorporated within the course
is the development of an appreciation of literary form. Emphasis is placed upon
the student's acquiring the necessary skills for oral and written expression,
including the compilation of a writing portfolio.
British Literature Honors
The course focuses on analysis and appreciation of masterworks of British
literature with a special emphasis on critical and analytical writing.
Creativity and personal expression are encouraged in a writing portfolio,
projects, and discussion. Students are expected to enter the class as proficient
writers and independent readers who are willing to accept the challenge of a
rigorous and challenging literary experience.

World Literature
This course is designed to study
literature as a social and historical document. During one semester, the student
will be guided to understand and appreciation the continuing relevance of
literary work from the rich translation of ancient to present times. The other
semester will place emphasis on Literary Drama, exploring the literary work and
its media counterpart: Film Script or Play Production. The student will also be
able to identify common threads of experience, imagination, and psychological
exploration among humans in every geographical and chronological location.
Writing skills and analytical papers along with Internet research are part of
the course study.

AP Literature
This course is designed to develop a student's abilities as a reader and writer,
especially as a critic of literature. The concentration of content for this
course is the study of artistic use of language of increasing complexity and the
close reading of demanding works of prose fiction, drama, and lyric and dramatic
poetry. Students are required to write graceful and well-structured analyses and
arguments about the literature they study. Intensive preparation for all aspects
of the Advanced Placement exam is provided.

Creative Writing
This semester class offers students the opportunity to engage in expressive and
creative writing. Emphasis is placed on process as well as product,
experimentation in the forms of poetry, drama, and fiction, and building a
community of writers through a workshop format.
