NEWARK — Mount St. Dominic coach Rob Stern was adamant in the days before the season started that his Lady Lions squad boasts not just an ace on its staff, but three excellent pitchers. And even in a game that ace Kelsey Oh didn’t pitch in, all three found ways to contribute either in the circle or at the plate.
Julianna Kocenski got the start and tossed four strong innings, freshman Ali Winters threw a shutout inning and both had home runs while Oh blasted a two-run shot of her own in a dominant 17-1 victory for No. 2 Mount St. Dominic over Pequannock at the Mount St. Dominic Invitational held at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field on the campus of Seton Hall University on Saturday.
Mount St. Dominic got on the board early, striking for five runs in the first inning and taking control from the onset. Danielle Dabroski smacked a double to the left-centerfield gap, and then was driven in when Kocenski hit the same shot to the right side. Oh then worked the count in her first plate appearance before blasting a two-run home run to left field. Winters followed that up with a solo blast to centerfield. Marisa Jenkins got on with a single, stole second and then scored on an error to make it 5-0 after one frame.
Pequannock got one run back in the top of the second when Jonnalyn McClain singled and came around to score on an error, but that was as close as the Panthers would get all day.
Sarah Taffett had an inside the park 3-run home run to cap a 9-run second inning, and Kocenski had a two-run home run in center in the bottom of the fourth to create the final margin of victory.
