CALDWELL – The Mount St. Dominic Academy softball team just completed a very successful week that saw it register five straight victories in games from Monday, April 8, through Saturday, April 13.

“We just completed a 5-0 week to push our record to 9-2 heading into the game vs. Verona,” said co-head coach Rob Stern ahead of the squad’s 12-1 victory over Verona on Monday, April 15. That victory resulted in the Lions’ record improving to 10-2 and extending their winning streak to seven games.

Junior Ali Winters hit two home runs and drove in five runs against Verona. Senior Dani Dabroski had four hits and drove in two runs.

The Lions defeated Millburn, 10-0, on Monday, April 8. In that game, Winters threw a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Dianna Yturbe drove in two runs.

Mount St. Dominic defeated Livingston, 6-0, on Wednesday, April 10. Freshman Sophia Kiseloski pitched a three-hitter with 16 strikeouts. She also had two RBI. Dabroski had two hits and an RBI, Winters had two hits, including a double, and Yturbe also had two hits. Junior Kasey Sekula drove in a run.

The Lions defeated Nutley, 5-1, on Friday, April 12, in a come-from-behind victory that saw them score five runs in the fifth inning after trailing 1-0.

“Dianna Yturbe hit a triple to give us the lead vs. Nutley,” Stern said.

Sophomore Kaylee D’Argenio, Dabroski, and sophomore Alexa Raphael each drove in a run against Nutley.

The Lions defeated Bishop Ahr, 8-1, and Watchung Hills, 8-6, both in the Mountain Lion Invitational in Caldwell on Saturday, April 13. Winters struck out nine and allowed one run on six hits, and Sekula was 3-for-4 with four RBI against Bishop Ahr. Winters had three RBI against Watchung Hills.

Stern said Dabroski was 11-for-17 during the week of April 8 through April 13 with eight runs scored and three RBI. Yturbe was 9-for-17 with four runs scored and three RBI.

Also that week, Stern said, Raphael was 8-for-14 with six walks, 10 runs scored, and 16 stolen bases. Sekula was 7-for-16 with six RBI and four runs scored.

On the mound, Winters was 3-0 with 28 strikeouts, two runs, and one earned run. Kiseloski was 2-0 with 24 strikeouts.

After the Lions’ season-opening 14-1 victory over West Essex on Monday, April 1, they defeated Caldwell, 12-0, on Thursday, April 4; and Tunkhannock (Pa.), 6-5, on Saturday, April 6, and Toms River North, 9-7, on Sunday, April 7, both in the NFCA Leadoff Classic held at Branch Brook Park in Newark.

The Lions’ only two losses were to Cedar Grove, 2-1, on Wednesday, April 3, and Caravel Academy (Del.), 4-1, on April 6 in the NFCA Leadoff Classic.

The Lions were scheduled to take on West Essex on Wednesday, April 17. They are set to take on Columbia on Thursday, April 18; Donovan Catholic on Saturday, April 20; and Caldwell on Wednesday, April 24.
