IN THE NEWS: Mount track team members set personal bests

CALDWELL – The Mount Saint Dominic Academy winter track team continues to perform well, and team members continue to improve on their personal records.
The Lions competed at the Ocean Breeze Invitational at Ocean Breeze High School in Staten Island, N.Y., on Saturday, Jan. 26, and Sunday, Jan. 27.
“We had some very nice performances that included some personal bests and a school record,” said head coach Rich O’Connor.
Sophomore Alexa Raphael continued her strong season at Ocean Breeze. “Alexa broke her own school record in the 55m dash, running 7.55 to place third in the sophomore 55m dash,” O’Connor said.
Raphael broke her previous record of 7.56 and placed third in the 55m dash at the Super Essex Conference Liberty Division Championships on Dec. 22. At the same meet, she broke the school record in the 55m hurdles, where she placed third.
Raphael also performed well at the Essex County Championships on Jan. 21.
“Alexa Raphael placed seventh in both the 55m dash and the 55m hurdles, qualifying for the finals in both events,” O’Connor said.
Other members of the team had stand-out performances at the Ocean Breeze Invitational.
Senior Bridget Murphy ran a personal-best 2:40 in the 800m run. She finished in 52nd place, while Julianna Herbst finished in 88th place.
Junior Julia Acevedo ran a personal-best 68.04 in the 400m and also had a personal-best jump of 14-7.75 in the long jump. Acevedo finished in 38th place in the 400m and in 15th place in the long jump. Murphy finished 45th in the long jump, with Christina Kurtz finishing 56th and Alina Zeleszko finishing 59th.
Junior Anya Michalewski ran 7.96 in the 55m dash.
Sophomore Carol Aguirre ran a personal best in the sophomore mile, running 6:21.5 and finishing 34th.
In the 200m dash, Alison Arcoleo finished in 24th place; Diana Yturbe finished in 38th place; and Michalewski finished in 46th place. Angela Mikelinich finished in 94th place.
Yturbe finished in ninth place in the shot put.
Also at the Essex County Championships, Raphael placed 14th in the 200m in 27.40. Murphy placed 20th in the 800m in 2:43.67.
Up next for the Lions is the New Jersey Catholic Track Conference Individual Championships on Sunday, Feb. 3 at Ocean Breeze. The team will compete at the NJSIAA Non-Public B Individual Championships on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Bennett Center in Toms River.
